Last week a report was published that filled me with happiness. Why? Because it recognises just how useful the arts can be in helping us to heal, stay healthy and to thrive. Writing, painting, music, dance and more… they all have a role to play.
There are certain ingredients for a healthy lifestyle. We know we must eat nutritious food, we must exercise regularly, we must get enough of sleep… But what about creativity? What if activities such as writing a poem, painting a picture or knitting a scarf were seen as vital to our wellbeing?
This is a rare treat. I’m not a morning person, so getting up early enough to be awake before my toddler is tricky. But when I do manage it, I love it. Early morning is such a precious time. The stillness, the calm… It’s as though a reset button has been pressed and there’s a chance to make things better with every new day.
